The mechanism is not fully understood, but may be related to its ability to stimulate proteoglycan synthesis in osto-arthritis cartilage. In double blind randomized controlled trials, SAM-e was as effective at two months as Celebrex in reducing pain from inflammation. Side effects can include nausea and gastrointestinal distress.
